COUNSELLING MISSION

Our counsellors facilitate students' career development and transition from high school into college/university into employment by providing a career planning and counselling service. Counselling services provided are free, held in confidence to students through a professional setting for emotional and developmental support.
 
The counselling services operate under the guidelines set out in the Code of Ethics and Practice as defined by the Malaysian Board of Counsellors. The Code provides the professional standard by which the service is delivered and managed.

CONFIDENTIALITY & EXEMPTIONS

All sessions are confidential, which means, what is said within the context of the therapeutic relationship stays between the student and counsellor.

However, parents have rights to be informed about the progress of treatment and to decide what is best for their child. The only limits to confidentiality include:
  1. When there is a risk of imminent harm to self or another person. The counsellor has a legal and ethical duty to do whatever is necessary to protect life.
  2. When a court of law orders a counsellor to release information, the counsellor is bounded by law to adhere.
  3. If a student reveals current information about abuse or neglect of minors, counsellors are mandated by law to report.
  4. Supervisory purposes.

REFERRAL GUIDE FOR FACULTY, STAFF AND STUDENTS

Step 1: Identify Behavioural Signs for Potential Referrals
 
  • Diminished or sudden drop of academic performance; loss of interest/motivation in studies.
  • Poor attendance/time management.
  • Unrealistic expectations/confusion on personal/career goals; dissatisfaction with academic major.
  • Feelings of guilt, worthlessness, self-recrimination, personal inadequacy.
  • Adjustment issues: cultural, social, learning, language etc.
  • Concerns on interpersonal relationship: peer, family, romance etc.
  • Acute increase in activity levels: excessive talking/rambling, physical restiveness, hyperactivity etc.
  • Unexplained crying and/or seemingly impulsive outbursts of anger; lack/excessive of sleep; sudden weight lost/gain; lack of stamina, persistent fatigue.
  • Excessive fear and anxiety; cynicism, prolong anger, irrational worrying
  • Poor study habits, sudden and acute of performance anxieties.
  • Problems with concentration, memory, attentive skills.
  • Unusual/inappropriate behaviour during class.
  • Expressed difficulties in family and/or marital relationships; need of attention/social support.
  • Show apparent signs of extreme poor self-care: poor personal hygiene.
  • Sign of withdrawal; feeling apathy; unwilling to communicate; loss of interest in social activities, tardiness.
  • Unusual or frequent irritability, suspiciousness, irrational feelings of being persecuted or slandered.
  • Grief/crisis: relationship breakup, demised of loved ones, severe illness (self or loved ones).
  • Expressed concerns regarding death (or divorce/separation) of family members or close friend.
  • Expressed undue concern with physical health.
  • Bullying/abuse: emotional, verbal, physical, spiritual and sexual.
  • Indications of increased/excessive drinking or drug use; cheating, lying, other antisocial behaviour.

The university is dedicated to ensuring the health and safety of its students. It includes the provision of:
  • First-aid facilities
  • Services and personnel required for the persons suffering from injury or illness at the campus - prescribes stat dose medication only for mild illness (fever, cough, gastric, headache), dressing for minor cut & bleeding, check-up for blood pressure & glucose monitoring.
  • First-aid training to KDU staff and students
  • Health and safety awareness / outreach programs 

SERVICES OFFERED
 
  • Minor surgical procedures, e.g cleaning wounds/dressings
  • Medication prescription (Limited for non-controlled medicines only. Other than the medicines listed, Group C medication can only be supplied by a pharmacist or doctor)
  • Antacids - Gastric
  • Analgesics - Panadol for fever and pain
  • Mucosolvan Syrup - Cough
  • Lozenges - Sore throat
  • Charcoal Pills - Diarrhoea / Food poisoning
  • Basic Health Screening (blood pressure and glucose checking)
  • Stabilising patients under emergency cases before referring to hospitals
  • Health consultation and education for patients
  • Nebulizer for asthmatic patient (Salbutamol solution must be brought by patient and prescribed by doctor) 

FACILITIES PROVIDED
 
  • Provides wheelchair, stretcher and crutches for emergency cases.
  • Serves as a sick bay for students and staff. 

Operation Hours: 8.30am - 5:30pm (Monday-Friday)

In case of an emergency, a KDU staff or student bearing a KDU Identification Card, with a KDU Health and Wellness Centre referral letter duly signed by SUNMED CLINICS SRN, will be treated at the Sunway Medical Centre Accident and Emergency Department without deposit.
