Paving the way for a sustainable entrepreneurship ecosystem, the Student & Alumni Centre of KDU University College has launched the Hatch Up initiative to build the youth’s creativity, innovative and entrepreneurial skills in tandem with the nation’s 2020 vision. Other initiatives setting out for 2018 under the KDU Youth Empowerment Plan are KDU Career Exploration, KDU Fitspiration, KDU Culturation and KDU Sustainability.

The Hatch Up series is packaged to provide the resources for students’ journey to a self-made success, which begins from Toolkits to BootCamp and finally the BizPlan Grand Final competition where students stood a chance to win cash prizes and seed funds up to RM10,000 and crowdfunding opportunities for their business idea. The Hatch Up BizPlan competition, under the KDU Youth Empowerment Plan, started off with the KDU Hatch Up Toolkits series to help supply the students with vital information on setting up their business proposal. Students who joined for the business proposal video submission and qualified for the Top 10 submissions proceeded to the next stage - Hatch Up BootCamp, which spanned over an intensed weekend to provide insights and guidance from mentors to have their proposals refined and tested. The time and effort spent with mentors and their respective teammates came down to the showdown on 23rd May 2018 to vie for the position of Top 3 KDU Hatch Up BizPlan competition winners.

The Grand Finale for KDU’s Hatch Up Bizplan Competition commenced at 12 noon inside KDU University College’s Lecture Threatre 2 in conjuction with Connected Campus Tour by GenYouth, hosting Founder and CEO of Admall Sdn. Bhd Dato’ Sri Dr. Patrick Tan and MY FM Radio DJ and Founder of Socialmex Mr. Jeff Chin. The welcome address was made by Associate Professor Dr. Hon Wei Min, Deputy Vice Chancellor of KDU University College with 73 students attending the event followed by the two guest speakers. Mr. Eldrick Koh, Founder of GenYouth, concluded the sharing session on the qualities needed in the face of the challenges along the entrepreneurial journey.

The eventful day continued with the main show of the KDU Hatch Up BizPlan competition at 2pm with the arrival of judges Dr. Johan Kamal Hamidon, CEO for Selangor Youth Community; Dr. Brian Wong Kee Mun, KDU’s Head of School of Business; Mr. Daniel Cerventus Lim, Founder of NextUp Asia and Malaysia Entrepreneurs; Mr. Saiful Rizal, Account Manager of Global Accelerator Program for the Malaysian Global Innovation & Creativity Centre (MaGIC) and Mr. Brian Tan, CEO and Co-Founder of FutureLab.

Students who succeeded to this stage were represented by four teams – Aqua Solutions, Team Possible, K.I. and MSCA. It was a nerve-wrecking 7 minutes of pitching for each team coupled with another 7 minutes of grueling hard-hitting questions on the feasibility and profitability of their business ideas. The teams drew slots in the sequence for their presentation and K.I. was the first to be up with their idea on an Augmented Reality traveling app. Aqua Solutions came up next with their IoT aquaponics system and MSCA on an interest-based job app. The last team to present before the judges deliberated was Team Possible with the peer-to-peer tutor app business model.

The judges saw potential in these teams to turn their business idea into a real world solution and have collectively decided that the RM8000 seed fund was to be awarded to the Grand Prize winner on top of the RM1000 cash prize. The Second Runner Up was firstly announced with the cash prize of RM300 which was awarded to MSCA while the First Runner Up was Aqua Solutions. The long-awaited results for the winning team was shared to the audience where Team Possible took the first spot as KDU Hatch Up BizPlan 2018 Grand Finale winners. The teams celebrated their success and look forward to the next chapter of achievement on their proposed business idea. SAC would like to congratulate the winning teams as well as the participating teams for their creativity and determination. KDU Hatch Up Phase 2 will be coming up soon in SAC’s continuous effort of building budding entrepreneurs.
