Charity 'AIDS Run' For A Purpose

Kuala Lumpur, 15 April 2014: KDU University College School of Hospitality, Tourism and Culinary Arts students organised a charity ‘AIDS Run’ for the first time in support of the Malaysian AIDS Foundatioin. A class of 19 students embarked on this mission to raise funds to provide aid for the foundation in carrying out its social responsibilities.

The five kilometres AIDS Run saw a total of 220 participants racing against each other for a good cause. This event held at the surroundings of KDU University College was a public event and consisted of four main categories, school children (age 15-17); youths (age 18- 30); adults (age 31- 45) and seniors (46 and above).

Associate Professor Dr. Hon Wei Min, Deputy Vice Chancellor of KDU University College said, “This charity event is an avenue to raise the level of consciousness within the community on ways to prevent HIV/AIDS and fighting against discrimination.

“Students are given the exposure level and hands-on experience to understand the working environment through these activities while giving back their services to charity. It is certainly a noble deed that is exemplary to others,” Dr. Hon added.

Also present at the AIDS Run was Puan, Zaharah Rustam, Deputy Director of Community Service Department, Majlis Bandaraya Petaling Jaya. She said, “We are definitely heading towards the right direction as we see university students with the support of their academia playing a responsible role in providing back to the society through various activities. Each participant who completed the race within a given time frame was handed a finisher’s medal. The winners from each category took home cash prizes, medals and trophies. There was also lucky draws which kept the participants anxious and excited towards the end of the event.

Saby Sebastien, the winner of the adults’ category said, “Marathons is my passion, however knowing that you are running for a charitable cause is even more meaningful. This run is a great platform to create the level of awareness needed among the community. This helps to brush aside the stereotypes and discriminators.

Another participant, Robert Gui added, “I have always supported social events and it feels great to give back to society. These students have done an extremely noble deed for the community and we are proud to be involved in their agenda.”

The event also saw the participation and participation support from big industry players including Pullman Putrajaya Lakeside, Pullman Bangsar, Novotel KLCC, Ibis Styles KL Fraser Park and Ibis Styles Cheras.

As a lead up to the AIDS Run, students were given an experience of a life time to operate their own full-fledged café since early March 2014 with the guidance of their lecturer, as none of them were culinary students. They were given different roles ranging from kitchen to preparation, serving, marketing and finance.

Hailing from the Event Management programme at KDU University College, these students started off with a zero budget and had to pitch for sponsors from various organisations to kick-start their project in support of the Foundation. The proceedings from this event and its pre-activities were donated to the Foundation.
