Kuala Lumpur, 21 April 2014: KDU University College School of Hospitality, Tourism and Culinary Arts (SHTCA) has once again organised the Power Chef and HotCat Race competition exclusively for secondary school Form 5 students around Klang Valley. Both these events provide various challenges to put the students’ culinary skills to test.

Considered a major affair for SHTCA, the PowerChef event is aimed to instil “culinary and management interest” within secondary schools and to discover hidden gems among students. It will also allow students to understand the nature of the profession in the culinary arts and provide hands-on experience of that same environment.

Kitty Lee, Head of SHTCA said, “We hope the Power Chef competition had a great impact on the participants. They were given various challenges that stimulated their sense of creativity and time management. We feel proud that these students were exposed to the culinary scene while providing them the opportunity to put their culinary knowledge to the test. “

Running on its 11th year, the Power Chef is based on a round-robin basis for the first three rounds, before proceeding into the quarterfinals, semi-finals and finals itself. Students were required to prepare a dish according to the international theme given where points were awarded for presentation; creativity and skills; taste; sanitation and hygiene.

Without surprise, the all-girls finalists were put to the “oven” for their final main-course dish with their very own themes. The team that triumphed was SMK Bandar Utama Damansara (4) as they bagged home travel vouchers worth RM 1,200 and the champions’ trophy, followed by Sri Kuala Lumpur School and SMK (P) Sri Aman. The other two winners brought home travel vouchers worth RM 1,000 and RM 800 respectively.

Jointly, Fatimah Ruslan and Veronica Ng, the winners of this year’s Power Chef said, “We are shocked and excited with the decision of the judges. The challenges given were difficult at times but we manage to pull them off smoothly with the support and tips from KDU University College’s chefs present there.”

“We definitely gained a lot of knowledge from this competition and hopefully we will put them to use in the near future. Although this is our final year of school, we will definitely push our juniors to participate in the following years to come.”

Meanwhile, the HotCat Race, ran simultaneously with the Power Chef competition was inspired by the programme, Amazing Race which saw teams from different schools vying against each other, clearing each obstacle and racing towards the finish line. The first three teams to complete the challenges and reach the finish line were adjudged the winners.

The winner of the hotly contested HotCat Race which saw the participation of a total of 31 teams was the team from SMK Damansara Jaya. Their efforts earned them travel vouchers worth RM 1,200.

For both events, the winning schools received a trophy and travel vouchers while second and third place winners received travel vouchers. Each participant also received a certificate of participation from KDU University College.
