KDU Athletes Went All Out And Won Medals In SUKIPT 2018

KDU University College’s sportsmen and sportswomen rewrote the history in participating the Higher Learning Institution Sports Meet – SUKIPT 2018, held in UKM, February 2 to 10, by bagging 3 medals which consisted of a silver and a bronze from taekwondo, as well as a bronze from badminton women singles categories.

By putting all-out efforts and portraying great sportsmanship, KDU sports team had indeed surprised the college’s community as they grasped the chance qualified themselves to that level and eventually placed KDU 45th in the medals ranking.

For this year, there were approximately 30 students participated in SUKIPT, the abbreviation for ‘Sukan Institusi Pendidikan Tinggi’. This is a sports event held every two years, involving the highest level of intervarsity of the entire nation and also a few institutions from overseas. KDU athletes had participated in the sports categories of badminton, tennis, fencing, taekwondo and shooting.

In preparing for this major sports event, taekwondo and badminton teams had poured in a lot of efforts in kicking start with their training sessions as soon as their examination was over in December 2017. The badminton team trained at least 3 hours, thrice a week, and the taekwondo team did not lose out with their two sessions daily until the coming of the event.

Throughout this journey, KDU sports team had shed their tears, blood and sweat amidst ups and downs in the process. By setting concrete goals, KDU athletes trained hard without excuses. Ultimately, they had given their opponent a hard fight and left no regrets, and thus excelled better than their previous SUKIPT results back in the year 2016 that was with only one medal.

Apart from the medal scorers, the other athletes also gained fair results by passing through the qualifying rounds and a lot of them actually nearly made it to the quarterfinals. In other sports categories such as fencing, was also managed to qualify for the quarter-finals while shooting hit a spot at the 6th place.

With the significant improvement achieved this year, KDU’s team determined to strive better for the coming sports events and tournaments. Besides trying to be a better self in the respective sports category, they are also committed to building up a team with more united spirit, as Jonathan Lok, the captain of Team KDU SUKIPT 2018 commented, “I feel honoured to lead the team and to be the flag bearer during the opening ceremony. It was a proud moment waving the KDU flag in front of the honourable guests and audience.”
