With the aim to support and facilitate KDU graduates in developing their skills, abilities and passion towards building a lifelong careers ahead of them, KDU’s Student and Alumni Centre (SAC) has arranged the KDU Industry Engagement Hi – Tea session on the 24 August 2017 at KDU University College flagship campus located at Utropolis, Glenmarie. The event was participated by over 30 leading companies such as Leaderonomics, Nestle Malaysia, Acer, Prudential, Sunway Medical Centre, Digi Telecommunications and many more to witness the endorsement ceremony of KDU Career Exploration and to utilise the session for exchange of thoughts, ideas, and knowledge on the current market employability rate as well as trends that are being practised in the real world.

KDU Career Exploration is one of the initiatives under the KDU Youth Empowerment Plan 2017 which is aimed to facilitate the process of selecting an internship or a job placement that would develop necessary skills and abilities in line with KDU students’ passion. As part of this process, KDU also incorporates university programme articulation by way of providing constructive briefings to students who wish to transfer to a university of their choice, making sure that KDU is paving a solid foundation for students to reach their dreams. This is reflective of the University Transformation Program by Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE), which emphasises the role of higher learning institutions in guiding graduates to develop their career pathways.

The special occasion kicked off with a keynote address delivered by Pn Elia Talib, the Founder and Managing Director of Graduan, the leading annual career and employment resource for Malaysian talent. “Education and industry have one thing in common, that is we are trying to develop graduates. As the institute of higher learning grooms the graduates for the working world, the employers here today will be receiving them. Therefore, it is essential that there is a form of collaboration between the two, as we can no longer be like those years where learning institutes only care about teaching graduates and the employers only hire those who are experienced,” enthused Elia. She added, “I believe that the collaboration that is being established by KDU addresses this matter directly and I am honoured to endorse this initiative.”
The highlight of the event was during the endorsement ceremony of KDU Career Exploration by Puan Elia Talib accompanied by Prof Dr Hiew Pang Leang, the Vice Chancellor of KDU University College and Assoc Prof Dr Hon Wei Min, the Deputy Vice Chancellor – Academic of KDU University College witnessed by the top management of KDU and the rest of the honourable guests invited for the session.

Following the endorsement ceremony, was the announcement of KDU Hatch Up BizPlan Competition’s Winners which was conducted previously during KDU Entrepreneurship Day 2017, with the objective of inspiring the young minds to produce fruitful and creative business ideas and proposals. The winners were crowned and given prize money by Pn Elia and Prof Dr Hiew witnessed by Assoc Prof Dr Hon and the guests of the afternoon session. The grand pitch winner of the BizPlan competition is team EZ Fit comprised of two members namely Ho Khor Khuen Brandon and Gan Teck Sian whereas the winner of the BizPlan Showcase: Students’ Choice Award is team MakanApa comprised of five members namely Krystal Chee Yung Zin, Lim Jia Yi, Tan Yu Ki, Nur Auni Batrisya and Sharifah Naomi Nur Iman.

The programme continued with a speech delivered by the Vice Chancellor of KDU University College, Prof Dr Hiew Pang Leang where he stated “One of the big areas which KDU is actively involved in promoting is the spirit of entrepreneurship. KDU hopes to foster the spirit of entrepreneurship amongst students through a myriad of activities which will allow them to demonstrate their own ideas and business initiatives. In life, the things in which we risk for are also the things which we are first passionate about. Passion is what drives and fuels a person to achieve something.”

The crowd adjourned after the group photo session right after the speech by Prof Dr Hiew. In the near future, it is hoped that KDU Youth Empowerment Plan could further drive soft skills development and also provide a platform for effective learning to transform KDU students from core leaders into adaptive leaders.
