KDU Robotics Challenge

Arming students with the most up-to-date engineering knowledge and encourage the application of critical thinking skills are the objectives of the KDU’s School of Engineering when they organised the School of Engineering Robotic Competition on the 15 November 2017 at KDU’s flagship campus located at Utropolis, Glenmarie Shah Alam.

The SOE Robotic Competition is a yearly signature event which provides a perfect platform for students to apply their engineering knowledge, to work together as a team and stimulate their critical thinking skills. The event showcased students’ talents and creativity to overcome multiple challenges by utilising the knowledge that they have acquired in classroom. Embracing the competitive spirit, students produced self-made, autonomous and creative mobile robots to be crown as the champion.

Throughout this competition, there were three major events with different level of complexity such as the Runway Robot (Beginner), U-Robot (Intermediate) and the Shield-Bot (Advance).
  1. Runway Robot: It is an event that challenges the participants to design and build a moving robot using recyclable materials
  2. U-Robot: It is an event that challenges participants to complete a U-shape track full of obstacles that could hinder the robots movements. The participants are required to manoeuvre across the track within a limited amount of time.
  3. Shield-Bot: This event challenges the participants to autonomously control the speed of the robot. There were two launching pads whereby the first one was when the robot was launched against the wall and participants were expected to apply a braking system to shield the robot from damage. The second part is when the robot was launched to climb up a slope and required to stop at the end of the steep slope. 

Students were required to work in teams of three to design and build the robots over eight to nine weeks prior to this event. The performance of the robots were judged based on its capability to finish the obstacle course within a limited amount of time while avoiding damage which may result in immediate disqualification. Apart from the performance of the robots that they have built, students were also evaluated based on their technical design, innovation, creativity and complexity. There were also other categories which award participants based on the best design for robot runway, best poster for robot runway and the best presenter of the whole competition.

The award winning ceremony was graced with the presence of the Deputy Vice Chancellor of Academic of KDU University College, Assoc Prof Dr Hon Wei Min who presented the prizes to the winners of each category. The result for each category and name of the recipients are as follow:

It was indeed a worthwhile event filled with excitement and insightful knowledge sharing among the participants, lecturers and the judges as they gone through the entire day of the SOE Robotics Competition 2017. After the group photo session, the event adjourned with happy and smiling faces of the participants and audience of the competitive event.
