KDU University College today signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Seni Teknologi Sdn. Bhd., in providing KDU’s students an opportunities to take part in the development and maintenance of Malaysian Halal Food Gifts (MHFG), a range of applications for e-marketplace that could propel Malaysia as one of the leading global halal food hub nations.

At a ceremony taken place at WOW KL! Malaysia Tourism Centre (MaTic), witnessed by the Honourable Minister of Tourism and Culture Malaysia, Yang Berbahagia Dato’ Seri Mohammed Nazri bin Tan Sri Abdul Aziz, signatories of both sides Mr Sheikh Fahmy bin Sheikh Mohamed, Chief Marketing Officer of KDU University College; and Mr Syed Hassan bin Syed Alwi Alhabshee, Director of Seni Technology Sdn. Bhd., officially inked this collaborative partnership.

As Malaysia is synonymous with gastronomic bliss, over the past few years, the Ministry of Tourism and Culture has been leveraging on Malaysian cuisine to promote Malaysia as a food tourist destination. Malaysia is also the first country to have a documented and systematic Halal assurance system, making Malaysia the leader in the world’s halal industry.

As such, it will be ideal to create a range of MHFGs and put them into an e-marketplace that is easily assessable by overseas markets. This marketplace will complement the current efforts of Ministry of Tourism and allow potential tourists to have a taste of the Malaysian cuisine overseas, thereby further enticing their desire to visit Malaysia.
Dubbed as a shelf-stable development project, MHFG is leveraging on cost-effective and efficient technologies in the e-marketplace, where buyers from all around the world could easily purchase Malaysian food products that certified by the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM).

Throughout this collaboration, KDU is working closely with Seni Teknologi in developing a diverse range of MHFGs that Malaysian could bring abroad when visiting friends and relatives, or allowing overseas customers to enjoy the Malaysian local food delights.

Addressed the audience, Dato’ Seri Mohammed Nazri revealed, “I am told that to-date, already 30 suppliers with more than 1,000 Halal food items have been listed in the marketplace. I hope more suppliers and Halal food items will get on-board the marketplace and share our Malaysian gastronomic delights with the rest of our Muslim & non-Muslim counterparts across the world.”

Earlier on, KDU CMO Mr Sheikh Fahmy stated in his speech, “This project resonates well with KDU’s vision as a higher learning institution. We strongly believe that our involvement in this project could offer brilliant opportunities for lifelong learning that spans across the research, development and marketing of Malaysia Halal Food across the world.”

Elaborated on the areas that KDU will play its part, Mr Sheikh Fahmy named different Schools for examples, “The School of Computing and Creative Media (SCCM) has been involved in the development of the marketing platform from the very beginning. One of our current Diploma in Computer Studies student involved in designing and coding the system; several other Diploma students are currently writing units test to ensure the integrity of the system.”

He mentioned, the School of Communication and Creative Arts (SCCA) students could play the role of enhancing the ‘marketability’ of Malaysian F&B companies and their Halal Food Gifts. Apart from that, they could also gain opportunities in researching and assist Malaysian companies to package their products into premium Food Gifts for the international market.

“Students from the School of Hospitality, Tourism and Culinary Arts (SHTCA) can take part in the development or fine-tuning of food items for Malaysia F&B companies, and working in conjunction with students from other schools to do market surveys and sensory testing,” he continued.

Mr Sheikh Fahmy concluded, “Having said that, KDU foresees a great future that lies beyond this prolific collaboration through which KDU students could greatly benefit from engaging directly with real industry players that offer a real-world solution at an international standard.”

In another word, by grooming up its students of globally real-world capabilities, KDU also takes pride in being able to help Malaysian companies to penetrate the global market throughout this smart partnership.

KDU top management and academics who also attended the ceremony included Prof Dr Hiew Pang Leang, Vice Chancellor; Ms Brenda Lee, Head of Corporate Strategy Development; Heads of Schools, Programmes Leaders; Academic Department Heads, managers, lecturers and students. Students from SHTCA had taken this opportunity in serving the audience with different dishes in the buffet luncheon, whereas SCCA students took the role of photographers and videographers in documenting this memorable event.
