KDU Student-Baristas Soar at Monin Coffee Creative Cup 2017

Student-baristas from KDU’s School of Hospitality, Tourism and Culinary Arts (SHTCA), who are honing their skills KDU’s campus coffee laboratory – 8igthy 7even by COFFEX, have recently displayed their strong abilities in artisanal coffee, by clinching awards from Monin Coffee Creativity Cup 2017.

This competition started with the preliminary blackbox round on 12 April 2017, with nearly 40 competitors mostly made up of players from the working industry with vast experiences and knowledge.

Nevertheless, though still pursuing their studies at KDU, Lim Xurene, a Bachelor of Culinary Management student, together with Tracia Chan Qi Li, student of Diploma in Culinary Arts programme, made their way to the Top 16, amidst fierce competition from the matured industry players.

At the finals held on 16 May 2017, Lim Xurene, who managed to be the Top 6, finally soared as she went proudly received her 1st Runner Up trophy from the organiser.

Xurene won this award with her own signature drink – Spiced Brewleé, a mixture of a few of her favourite ingredients and flavours, namely the spices used in Indian cuisine, sweetness from the mango, milky coffee and burnt sugar from a creme bruleé.

Both Xurene and Tracia shared their joy with their mentor and trainer, Mr Lucas Looi Mun Hoe, a professional barista at 8ighty 7even café, who have been preparing them for this competition. Congratulations to Xurene, Tracia and 8ighty 7even, as this coffee lab has proven its strength in providing added advantage to KDU students by carrying them into the real world.
