KDU Students Proud Winners At MHTC’s Reality Check Video Challenge 2017

On 12 August 2017,  11 KDU students won the individual category of the Malaysia Healthcare Travel Council’s (MHTC) Reality Check Video Challenge 2017 with the awards ceremony held at Beverly Wilshire Medical Centre, the venue host located at Jalan Tun Razak, Kuala Lumpur.

KDU’s participants for this challenge were from the School of Communication and Creative Arts (SCCA) who study Bachelor of Communication (Hons) and Diploma in Mass Communication programmes, particularly from the classes of Principles of Advertising and Human Communication.

“KDU SCCA had a total of over 180 entries from both the diploma and degree communication programmes, as each student is allowed to send in 3 submissions,” said Timothy Chan Liem Joe, Programme Leader for Bachelor of Communication, Department of Communication & Media Studies in SCCA.

Category A for the competition comprised of 30 individual prizes up for grabs and our students impressively bagged more than a one-third of them by securing 11 slots. There were at least a total of 650 individual entries for category A hailing from 7 different universities from Klang Valley and Penang. Each prize is worth a cash prize of RM200.00 and a goodie bag with free dental treatment.

The video challenge is themed at creating 5 second videos that cover a perspective of health, which divided into the categories of Physical Health, Lifestyle Health, Mental Health, Social Health and so on.

According to Chan, KDU students applied well what they had learned in class, as in the process of participating this challenge, they were able to identifying the ‘theme’ or ‘idea’ that they wanted to portray on the aspects of health. This followed by content-planning of each of the 5 seconds video.

“As the duration of is relatively short, thus, catching the audience’s attention and then projecting a message to them within the time line is very challenging. There were 3 revisions prior to the submissions. The students had to fine-tune the wordings, music as well and strengthen the message that they wished to convey,” Chan elaborated.

Nevertheless, from his observation, Chan found that as each student was given the freedom to produce something that they were passionate about, they were able to make their ways through this challenge. “Passion is utmost important in advertising career. Our students showed dedication and commitment to create better videos. Some students had to re-shoot or re-edit when feedback was given.”

During the prize-giving ceremony, KDU winners received their prizes from Mr Brandon Liu, Head of Product & Local Market, Malaysia Healthcare Travel Council.
