KDU University College and Digi co-operative education programme provide opportunity learning beyond classroom

SHAH ALAM, 17 November 2015 - KDU University College and Digi Telecommunications officially launched its first collaborative programme together for KDU’s Diploma in Business students entitled the Digi-KDU UC Co-operative Education Programme. The ceremonial event tripled also as the official opening of the Digi Store located at the KDU University College, Utropolis Glenmarie campus and the graduation of the inaugural group of the programme through the Sales Challenge Awards with prizes totalling RM6,000.
 
The purpose of this programme is for KDU to provide students with learning opportunities beyond the classroom walls; to increase collaboration between the industry and academia; and to apply classroom theories in real world situations for students’ learning, growth and personal development. To achieve this, students are required to go through a series of training modules such as attending orientations to gain retail and customer service insights, working at a bustling Digi Retail Outlet, creating and executing their own business plan during the Sales Challenge, to name a few.
 
During her opening address, Deputy Vice Chancellor of KDU University College, Associate Prof. Dr. Hon Wei Min said, “Working in the real world, it is vital for students to be flexible and adaptable. This comes through not only have a high IQ, but especially, a good EQ.” She also mentioned how the co-operative programme serves as an excellent extension of KDU’s “3Es Initiative” (English Proficiency, EQ Development and Entrepreneurship) being embedded into its curricula and the importance for students to possess an open mind and good attitude in the working industry. “Ultimately, maturity and character is what will take you far in your career and life,” she concluded.
 
“When we first heard of the idea of this collaboration, we were really looking forward to making this programme a reality because it gives us the chance to discover and lend a hand in developing talent for the Malaysian business landscape and future corporate leaders,” said Digi Head of Consumer Sales, Mr. How Lih Ren. “Working within a budget and using it to maximise earnings by being adaptable and creative is what the real world of business is all about,” he added when asked about the students’ performance in the Group Sales Challenge.
 
One of the participants of the 2-month-long programme, Jacklyn Koh, said, “I am really glad that Digi and KDU offered this programme because this allows us to put into practice all the business theories we learned in the classroom and provides us hands-on experience in marketing, retail and sales.” Her sales group, Team Klang, won the Sales Challenge Grand Prize of RM3,000.
 
This Digi-KDU co-operative programme is set to be offered to KDU’s Diploma in Business senior students over the next few years. Strategic partnerships between academia and industry, such as this programme, will foresee continued growth of educational development and life enrichment of KDU students.
