Shah Alam, 9th December 2014 – KDU University College (KDU UC) and the Master Builders Association Malaysia (MBAM) today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), to contribute to skills and knowledge development for the construction industry via the development of diploma, degree and professional development programmes beneficial to the building industry.

MBAM is an association representing the Malaysian construction industry and services sector, with the aim of promoting and developing the construction industry in Malaysia.

The MoU was signed by Prof. Dr. Khong Yoon Loong, Vice Chancellor of KDU UC while Mr. Matthew Tee Kai Woon, President of MBAM signed on behalf of MBAM. Dato’ Sri Sufri Bin Haji Mohd Zin, Vice President of MBAM and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hon Wei Min, Deputy Vice Chancellor from KDU UC were at hand to witness the signing.

Commenting on the collaboration, Prof Dr Khong said, “Construction is one of the most vibrant and fastest growing industries in Malaysia today. At KDU UC, we pride ourselves in keeping our finger on the pulse of industry’s needs, so it was clear to us that there was both a need and an opportunity to develop tertiary level and certification programs for the betterment of the building industry in Malaysia.

Under the terms of the MOU, KDUUC will develop programmes aimed at upgrading the skills and training of students for the building industry, with MBAM representatives providing the relevant support and building industry inputs. KDU UC would also drive participation in these programmes by seeking recognition from the relevant bodies associated with the building industry and promoting these programmes through relevant channels.

MBAM in turn would work with its members to open doors for KDU UC students of these courses to undergo industrial training opportunities with their members.

To ensure that the programme stays relevant to industry needs, a representative of MBAM will be appointed as a member of the KDU UC’s Industry Advisory Panel for the Built Environment.

MBAM President, Mr Matthew Tee added, “With this collaboration we hope that we will be able to produce more skilled workers to fill in the shortages in the building industry, to sustain the growth of the building industry which we are experiencing right now and with this as we all know human capital development is essential in our industry.”

This collaboration is a significant development for MBAM as there is a soaring demand for well-trained and knowledgeable construction industry professionals these days, especially in the Klang Valley. MBAM is actively collaborating with other private institutions in the interest of exploring more programmes to be developed for the betterment of the building industry.

The MOU was signed at KDU UC’s new 10-acre flagship campus at Utropolis Glenmarie, which will open its doors to students in January 2015.
