Petaling Jaya: The School of Hospitality, Tourism and Culinary Arts (SHTCA), KDU University College generously donated RM 5,000 to The National Cancer Society of Malaysia, in conjunction with the European Food Fest 2014 held at its premises recently, introducing a variety of European Cuisine from different countries to students and staff.

This event was extra meaningful when the winning team for “Best Sales Team” donated their sales profit to The National Cancer Society of Malaysia. Madam Rita Ho, a representative from The National Cancer Society of Malaysia was delighted with Team French’s generous gesture.

Madam Ho said, “We are grateful that KDU University College recognises and understands the needs of the community. As a higher learning institution, it is admirable to teach and be role models to its students, highlighting the importance of charity with a sincere heart in helping those in need.”

This annual event saw a wide range of cuisine offerings, spanning countries like Switzerland, Germany and France. Students from SHTCA were divided into different teams and were mentored by a Chef. This competition based event was judged on two different categories, “Best Stall Decoration” and “Best Sales Team”.

To a few student contestants, this was their first experience in preparing and cooking at such an event. Nigel Fong Yang, a contestant from Team Italy said, “This European Food Fest provides students a life-time experience which contributes to our career. We learnt many things that were not taught theoretically, however we managed to put into practice the fundamental values that we have learnt throughout our stint here.”

Some student contestants felt this event was a stepping stone for them to understand what to expect in the working world once they graduate. A student contestant from Team British, Amanda Huang Chia Wern said, “We were given the opportunity and flexibility to manage our own stall. We had to make positive decisions, work as a team and create innovative ideas adapting to situations. The all out support from our lecturers and Chefs, the encouragement to think out of the box in terms of ideas while still having to follow rules and guidelines made this a crucial time to put our lessons into practice and learn from our mistakes.

The European Food Fest 2014 gave its student contestants an outlook of what is expected in the working world. It was an experience that is targeted to provide students the edge to excel in their field of expertise. With the introduction of E3-Boosters into the curricula by KDU University College, students are more confident as they are equipped with a special set of skills to assist them in their future. The E3-Boosters focus on English Proficiency, EQ Development and Entrepreneurship, all elements which made for a successful and great learning experience for the students at the European Food Fest 2014.
