Petaling Jaya – In conjunction with the Global Game Jam 2014, KDU University College piloted the Global Game Jam Bootcamp at its campus, partnering IGDA Malaysia and supported by the Malaysian Entry-Point Project Game Development Cluster, MyGameDev2020 and the Multimedia Development Corporation (MDeC).

The Global Game Jam Bootcamp attracted a total of 65 students from various schools in the peninsular. It was filled with exciting workshops, interesting game plays and provided new inductees with an understanding of the basic fundamentals of creating games and provided returnees the opportunity to sharpen their game development skills.

A seasoned participant with attendance to three Bootcamps , Isaac Lim a student from Methodist Boys’ School, Kuala Lumpur said, “The initial stages of my game development process was through the teachings and lessons provided by the lecturers and mentors at KDU University College. The generous support from these individuals has helped me design and create my own games. I believe this annual Bootcamp will continue to help me refine my expertise in modelling new technologies in game development.”

As a new student participant to this scene, Brandon Lee said, “Although I am clueless about game development, I came here with an open mind to learn and experience something new. Within these three days, I have gained so much of knowledge and experience which has helped me discover my potential in game creation. I hope to participate in this Bootcamp next year as I continue to enhance the skills I have obtained here.”

Global Game Jam is an international game development marathon held under the efforts of the International Game Developers Association (IGDA) which gathers game developers all around the world to create games based on central theme within 48 hours in the spirit of collaboration, sharing and having fun.

A veteran in the game development industry, Richard Lemarchand, Associate Professor of Interactive Media and Games Division, University of Southern California said, “The Global Game Jam unleashes the creativity of individuals to build and strengthen the international community of game creators.”

“Some of the tips that have made me successful in this industry are finding a group of people who share the same passion and are focused on establishing a strong relationship among them. Then, start brainstorming on ideas and chose the most creative idea to work on. Never be afraid to fail as you will always learn something new and exciting about game development,” added Lemarchand.

The Global Game Jam, a voluntarily run organisation aims to stimulate innovation, experimentation, collaboration and creativity. With the partnerships, they look for initiatives that bring the values of Global Game Jam to a broader audience and create opportunities for participants to connect with their games on a broader scale.

In efforts to forward the game development industry, a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) between KDU University College and University of Teesside was signed to bring Animex UK to Malaysia and KDU University College was to run it as an exclusive South-East Asian Chapter.

This exclusive partnership would see Teesside University leveraging on their industry connections to bring world-class speakers to Malaysian shores. This seals KDU University College and Malaysia as the de-facto location for talent development and attract international participants with a festival of such calibre.

This collaboration is one of the many steps taken by KDU University College to boost its E3 Boosters initiative where students are given the opportunity to expand and develop different skills while having the marketable edge. Also, it provides a platform for students to showcase their talents and expose them to the game industry.

With the introduction of E3 Boosters into the students’ curricula, KDU University College has focused its vision to instill important values into its students. There are three elements involved in boosting the demand and comprehensiveness of students which represents English Proficiency, Emotional Quotient and Entrepreneurship.

“By hosting the Animex International at KDU University College, students would be well exposed as to what is happening in the global game development industry and market. Students would also understand the level of quality and requirements expected from the global games market. Workshops and talks by professional developers from overseas will help improve and increase the knowledge of students,” added Professor Dr Khong Yoon Loong.
