To inculcate interest and encourage the younger generations to invest more time into accounting and numerical subjects, KDU University College’s National Marketing department has organised a one day event – Accounting Challenge 2017 on the 8 July 2017 at its flagship campus located at Utropolis, Glenmarie.

The Accounting Challenge is an annual KDU signature event, which aims to help Form 5 or 12th Grade students to prepare for their accounting trial and final examination. The event was participated by over 14 secondary schools and up to 56 students that competed in a series of challenges related to accounting, where the winner will take home a grand prize of RM1, 500 and a 100% scholarship from KDU University College.

Contestants of this competition comprised of the top 4 students in accounting subject from each secondary school around the Klang Valley area. They were invited to participate in this competition to flex their muscles and learn from their peers in improving their understanding of the accounting subject. Most importantly, this competition has set a stage for the participants to prove their mettle in terms of the speed and accuracy of overcoming the challenges throughout this event.

According to Mr Lai Chee Onn, a senior lecturer of KDU’s School of Business, “This competition challenges participants to be open-minded, to be able to think out of the box, to be creative, to strategise and make right decision in a stressful situation, and not forgetting, to have fun during the process.”

There were two segments in this competition namely, ‘Treasure Hunt’ and ‘Head to Head Contest.’ In the first segment, four members in a group needed to solve accounting problems in order to move on from one station to another, within a time constraint of one and a half hour. The fastest team will get their bonus points.

According to Mr Lai, the organiser has upgraded the level of difficulty of the questions set this year, based on the performance and capability of participants that keep on elevating year by year. However, the organiser used a new marking system for this year, to enable participants to complete the entire quiz, even when they can’t solve a particular problem by not awarding them marks for that particular round.

During the competition, participants were vigorous and active as they had not only paid full attention to each question before them but also made full use of their scientific calculators in solving the problems. By responding swiftly, they had fully demonstrated the level of agile mind in them.

“This challenge is not only to test their accounting knowledge, as in this competitive business world, academic knowledge is not sufficient to counter the challenges, what more important is creative thinking, decision making and so forth,” explained Mr Lai.

During the head to head contest which held simultaneously in different classrooms that took up an hour, participants testified their strategies in decision making, especially under stressful situation.

For the announcements of winners, Lim Sheau Fang, Low Pui Ee, Archana a/p Sambath and Priscillia Ng from SMK Assunta, had proven to all that they are good and well-trained accounting students by clinching the Champion award with RM1500 cash prize and 100% scholarship provided by KDU.

“KDU will be one of our option in pursuing accounting studies since we have gotten the 100% scholarship!” said the Champion-winners who are planning to do ACCA, Accounting and Finance and ICAEW after completing their SPM examination.
