KDU University College has signed a three-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with The Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) for its students to pursue the CIMA professional qualification while studying or upon graduation.

In order to prepare students with the right skills and mind-sets, the School of Business at KDU University College put its emphasise on practical and humanistic education approach. Besides its strong industry networks and the compulsory four months internship requirement in the undergraduate programme, the School also partners with various professional bodies to enhance students’ professional learning experience and provide them the right pathway to stay relevant and competent when they join the industry upon graduation.

The partnership with CIMA will grant exemptions to the School of Business students studying any Accounting, Business, Accounting & Finance, Banking & Finance, Enterprise Risk Management and Financial Planning programmes from Diploma to Degree and Master level, and even up to their PhD (Business) programme.  Successful candidates will graduate with their degree and receive the Chartered Global Management Accountant (CGMA) designation once they have obtained a minimum of three years’ relevant work experience. With the professional qualification, the candidate may apply to the Malaysia Institute of Accountants (MIA) and register as a Chartered Accountant.

The MoU signatories were KDU Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic) Associate Professor Dr. Hon Wei Min and Venkkat Ramanan, FCMA, CGMA, Regional Vice President – Asia Pacific, Association of International Certified Professional Accountants (The Association), on behalf of CIMA.

“The new generation of students has a different mind-set to what we used to have before. Coupled with the market advancement in terms of technology and work requirement, we, at KDU University College believes that students should be given choices and they should be equipped with the right set of technical and soft skills in order to remain relevant and recent to the market. Thus, working with professional bodies like CIMA will provide another platform for the students to decide on their career path and contribute to the society in a more meaningful way,” said Hon.

“We are always looking to partner with more institutions or organisations to increase management accountants in the country. Times have changed in this digital era where finance function changes rapidly and a management accountant comes in handy for an organisation. Our collaboration with KDU University College will prepare the students with the competency skills that a management accountant should possess and at the end of it, be an asset for their future employer,” said Ramanan.

KDU University College is working closely together with CIMA in regards to necessary training sessions, materials for classes and organise or participate in any relevant activities that either party will be organising. In line with the economic growth of the nation, both parties are in view of nurturing more management accountants in the near future.

The School of Business at KDU University College also partners with other professional bodies such as Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), Certified Practising Accountant (CPA) Australia, Financial Planning Association of Malaysia (FPAM), Institute of Enterprise Risk Practitioners (iERP) and more.
