Kuala Lumpur, 3 April 2014: KDU University College and IMI University Centre (IMI) has collaborated with Asian Food Channel (AFC), part of the Scripps Networks Interactive in producing its latest original production, ‘How to Make it: Culinary Dream’ on Astro 703.

This production which will span over six episodes stars Malaysia’s much-loved celebrity, Awal Ashaari as he enrols in a crash course at KDU University College to learn the secrets behind running a successful Food & Beverage business.

As Awal Ashaari goes down the road of discovery and pursues his dream of opening his own bistro, the actor-turned-host takes on tough culinary challenges set by his lecturers, from preparing gourmet dishes to creating an inviting dining atmosphere. His exciting journey at KDU University College is an eye-opener to the important elements and details needed to set-up a successful restaurant business in Malaysia.

Commenting on his life experience here at KDU University College, he was quick to reply, “Personally, it has been an overwhelming experience as I was chosen to star in this reality show, learning the fundamentals and skills of culinary from the best Chefs in town.

“Although the challenges mounted, my ‘lecturers’ and ‘classmates’ were very supportive and helpful in many ways and the pinnacle of my culinary journey was the Euro Food Fest 2014 organised by KDU University College. We, as a team had to run a full-fledged F&B business which included the finance, budgeting, marketing, food preparation and serving aspects. Thanks to the classes that I attended at KDU University College, I managed to pull it off sweetly,” he added.

Sharing his excitement, Professor Dr. Khong Yoon Loong, Vice Chancellor of KDU University College adds, “At KDU, we are committed to providing our students with only the best learning experience to further them in their careers. On top of their academic programs, we embed elements of our E3 -Boosters initiatives which include English proficiency, EQ development and Entrepreneurship for our students. Awal went through a culinary crash course at our 'School of Hospitality, Tourism and Culinary Arts’ (SHTCA) and we trust that his experience at KDU University will arm him with the skills and knowledge to open his own bistro.”

Derek Chang, Managing Director of Scripps Networks Interactive Asia Pacific said, “We are very happy to be working with our partners, KDU University College and IMI on this program. We hope that AFC viewers will join Awal as he learns about opening up an F&B business in Malaysia. ‘How to Make It: Culinary Dreams’ is a compelling and relatable series and we anticipate great response for the premiere. It was a pleasure working together with KDU to produce this high-quality program and we look forward to working closely with them again in the future.”

The students from SHTCA involved in this reality show, Nigel Yang and Amanda Huang shared the same experience, they said, “We feel that the experience which we gained during the reality show made us realize what we really wanted to pursue in life. It also showed us that we are far beyond capable of doing more things than we thought. It's a stepping stone in our career path and it is going to push us to achieve our goals.”

Relating to the kind of challenges presented to Awal and his team, Chef Fami Taufeq, one of the main Chefs in the reality show said, “I can say that every episode focuses on different set of skills and knowledge applied by Awal’s and his competitors. We create various challenges and scenarios on each episode for the audience to understand the culinary industry and what it takes to be a chef student. It is also encouraging to witness Awal’s improvement on each episode as he battles out in different challenges.”

With over 30 years of strong history in the culinary industry, KDU University College has produced some of the best Chefs and Hoteliers in the industry both locally and abroad. Gurcharan Singh, one of the senior lecturers and part of reality show cast said, “This effort will further strengthen the KDU University College’s brand image and its presence as the leading and trusted educational institution for tourism, hospitality and culinary studies. I believe with the new campus, we will grow better and will be one of the best Schools in Malaysia and Asia.”

Catch the premiere exclusively on the Asian Food Channel, Wednesday 9 April at 9.00pm on Astro Channel 703 (Jakarta/Thailand at 8pm). This programme will be broadcasted regionally across 12 territories in Asia.
