The Next Big Thing - Software Engineering

Mr Tan Chin Ike, the Head of School for the School of Computing and Creative Media  Our students enjoy state of the art facilities alongside quality education
SHAH ALAM, 20 August 2015 - Today’s world is constantly evolving at a rapid and unimaginable rate, all thanks to technological development. With the society being ever so hungry for more innovations to integrate into our daily lives, one needs to stay relevant and in line for the next booming industry.

Computing and computer technology are part of just about everything in our lives and is key in the development of human capital for tomorrow. Understanding different dimensions of computing is a necessary skill set for the 21st century world citizen. In today’s scene, digital technology are found in everything and are everywhere. This fact is making computer scientists and software engineers indemand because they are the ones leading the way in developing the next generation systems of operating systems, applications, integrated systems, artificial intelligence and robotics.

As more of the world runs on software, the demand for such high-level skills will only grow in the years ahead. In fact, the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), the world's largest scientific and educational learned society for computing, states that there are 5 major facets of Computing which are; computer science, information systems, information technology, computer engineering and software engineering.

“KDU University College recognises the need to integrate and diminish the gap between industry requirements, practice and technology, and academic delivery,” explains Tan Chin Ike, Head of the School of Computing and Creative Media (SCCM) at KDU University College.

Continuing, Tan explained that in line with KDU’s commitment to provide quality education, SCCM will also focus on talent development within one of the most highly sought-after components of computing – Software Engineering.

SCCM is proud to introduce the all new Bachelor of Software Engineering (Hons) in its programme line-up. The three-year programme is geared at producing talents that are proficient in the core principles of software engineering. Offered at KDU’s flagship campus, Utropolis Glenmarie, students who choose to undertake the programme benefit from an additional boost KDU University College is working together closely with the global IT mammoth, IBM.

Essentially, software engineering is a branch of study that focuses on large-scale software systems; employs certain ideas from the world of engineering in building reliable software systems. Software engineers are concerned with the development and maintenance of software systems according to all the requirements that has been defined by the end-users/clients.

Through this Bachelor’s Degree programme, students will be exposed to the core software development knowledge which includes skills and techniques in modelling and analysis, software design, development, verification and validation, maintenance and management systems.

Always a firm believer in providing a holistic education and ensuring its students hit the ground running, the syllabus at KDU goes beyond theoretical learning. As such, student projects will span from business applications, high-precision and safety critical scientific and engineering systems as well as content management in order to truly mould them to be malleable to the ever expanding industries out there.

Software engineering is an evergreen career option that is evolving and growing fast. Students who undertake the programme at KDU can easily explore careers as Software Developer, Systems Software Developer, Applications Web Developer, Database Administrators and more.
