SHTCA Students Soar In Careers @ Hiltonlive Hospitality Talent Cup 2016 Competition

KDU students from the School of Hospitality, Tourism and Culinary Arts (SHTCA), KDU University College, made everyone proud by coming on top at the Career @ Hiltonlive Hospitality Talent Cup 2016 organised by renowned international hotelier Hilton Worldwide Malaysia for their 3rd consecutive years.

Held on 9 May 2016 at Hilton KL Sentral, this competition was opened to colleges and universities in the country. Aimed to expose students to various careers and opportunities with Hilton Worldwide, this year event saw participation of five private institutions – KDU University College, Taylor’s University, Berjaya University College of Hospitality, Lincoln University College and HELP University.

There were 4 categories of competition, namely, The BAR Cup (signature cocktail presentation), The Barista Cup (free-style specialty coffee presentation), The Chocolate Display (signature presentation) and Marketing and Commercial Pitch.

KDU’s SHTCA was sending 40 students participating in this grand event, while 6 of them participated the competition by two in each categories of The BAR Cup, The Barista Cup and The Chocolate Display, the rest of the students were there giving moral support to their course mates. Besides that, these students were also attended side-line activities such as talks and presentations on careers opportunities at Hilton.

“Prior to the actual competition, we had trained the participants for 2 weeks, as they need to prepare and present their works or product in front of the audience and judges on stage. These contestants were selected by lecturers for each category KDU was participated,” said Mr Sharizal bin Kamaruddin, Academic Department Head of SHTCA.

After rounds of stiff competition, the elite troop of KDU outshined the other contestants by winning two first place prizes, a second, third and fourth places.

Ho Huixin, student of Bachelor of Culinary Management programme, won the first place in The Barista Cup category; whereas in The Chocolate Display category, Joshua Fabhane Johnson laurelled with first place, and Mehreen Hassan the second, they both are student doing Bachelor of Culinary Management.

Arrick Annison and Theevisri A/P Suba Rao, both doing Diploma in International Hospitality and Tourism Management in KDU University College, won third and fourth places in the BAR Cup category.
Shared his opinion on the distinctive achievement of SHTCA’s students in this competition, Mr Sharizal said, “By participating in this competition, the contestants actually grasped an opportunity to express and unleash their talents. Through this way, they will eventually building up their self-confidence and also improve their public speaking skills. I am very proud of them!”  
Apart from trophies and certificates of participation, the winners also received attractive prize of a 3 days 2 nights stay at the Executive suites across all Hilton lodgings in Malaysia with complimentary breakfast and lunch. Congratulation to these talents!
