Kuala Lumpur, 23 March 2014: The School of Business and Law of KDU University College was proud to have YB Senator Dato’ Sri Abdul Wahid Omar, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department share his experiences and opinions in the guest lecture entitled ‘Why Accountants Are Future-Proof’ at its Section 13 campus recently.

The lecture given by YB Senator Dato’ Sri Wahid was part of the school’s preliminary event before launching its Bachelor of Accounting programme which was developed with the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA). This collaboration was made to continue both institutions’ long-standing efforts in educating, training and developing Malaysians, and creating cohorts of professionals that aid in the development of the nation.

Professor Khong Yoon Loong, Vice Chancellor of KDU University College said, “I feel this is an innovative programme that combines the best of both worlds – academic and professional – ideal to prepare accounting students for a rapidly changing business environment.

Discussing on the collaboration between KDU University College and ACCA, YB Senator Dato’ Sri Abdul Wahid Omar, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department was quick to reply, “This partnership creates a direct and accelerated path to an ACCA qualification that is, indeed, one of the required measures to assist accounting graduates in becoming a much needed talent for the accounting profession and transforming Malaysia towards a developed nation status.”

He also added, “Building a strong and vibrant service sector is essential towards our drive in becoming a developed nation with high income, inclusive and sustainable. The accountancy profession is one of the key talent resources required to bring this goal to reality. Malaysia needs to ensure that it has the number of accountants to support this growth. Some 60,000 accountants will be required by the year 2020, double the current number of 30,000.”

In this regard, the industry, professional bodies and academia must work together to ensure that graduates and professionals are on par with their international peers. Government units such as the accountant general and auditor general offices must also be involved actively in building the profession. Emphasis must also be placed on continuing professional development to enable our professionals to keep abreast of developments in the industry.

Dato’ Sri Abdul Wahid Omar also said, “Accountancy is the most versatile of profession and can be considered future-proof. Specifically, the accountancy profession is future-proof because of the principles of integrity, independence and prudence embraced by its members, and the requirement for qualified accountants to continuously update and upgrade their knowledge through the continuing professional development programmes. Accountants must also of their own volition readily adopt and understand new and emerging technologies. Finally, as leaders of their organisations, accountants must embrace inclusivity and diversity.

“This is very much in-line with the fresh vision and strategies of KDU University College. We recognize that being book smart is not enough.
