Scholarship FAQ

How do I know if I am eligible for a scholarship?

You are eligible to apply for a particular scholarship if you are able to adhere to the requirements that are stated in the scholarship website or brochure.

Besides good academic results, eligibility may also be dependent on nationality, the program in which you are enrolling in as well as English proficiency levels. In many higher learning institutions, scholarships are usually only open to students who have already been accepted into a program offered by the university.

What do I need to submit with my scholarship application?

In addition to the scholarship application form where you provide your general details, you will most likely have to furnish the following documents:

  • Certified true copy of your academic results
  • Certified true copy of IC/passport
  • Letter(s) of recommendation
  • An essay on the topic given

What are my chances of gaining a scholarship and how do I improve it?

As there are many students around the world who are in need of funding for their studies, scholarships are no doubt incredibly competitive.

Merit-based scholarships are largely dependent on outstanding academic results. However, many times the quality of your application as well as your financial status will also be considered.

To improve your chances of winning a scholarship, make sure that you include all the documents that are requested. Dedicate some time to ensure that your application is in order. If possible, communicate why a scholarship will help you and ensure that you submit your application before the deadline.

When is the deadline to apply for a scholarship?

The deadline for scholarship applications depends on the scholarship that you are applying for. It will be stated on the website or brochure. Do ensure that you check for the dateline in order to submit your applications in time.

How do I avoid scholarship scams?

Unfortunately, there are people who want to take advantage of unsuspecting students. Be wary if

  • The scholarship sounds too good to be true
  • The application process seems too easy
  • You need to pay to apply.
  • If the provider is offering a ‘guaranteed scholarship’
  • If you receive an unsolicited email

A quick and simple way to validate the authenticity of the scholarship is to conduct and online search. If there is no information or information is vague and unclear, then it might be a scam. Official government, schools and reputable organizations’ websites are the safest route in your scholarship search.

Can I use my trial results to apply for a scholarship?

Provisional or trial results are usually not sufficient enough for scholarship applications. Scholarship applications usually require a certified true copy of your actual results.

What types of scholarships can I apply for?

There is actually a wide range of scholarships available that you can consider. Partial scholarships cover a part of your tuition fees while full scholarships cover the cost for the whole program. Most scholarships do not cover living costs.

There are also scholarships that cater to local and international students as well as scholarships offered for a particular field of study. For example, there are certain scholarships that are specifically for students from developing countries.

Where can I find scholarship opportunities?

You can see information from your chosen university. Information on scholarships will usually be listed on the university’s website as well as prospectus. You will also be able to find contact information if you have any questions on scholarships.

For scholarships offered by the government and organizations/charities, you can head over to the relevant websites. There are also scholarships search services from which you can track down information to fund your studies.

It may require some time and work to look for scholarships that you are eligible for, so be patient and don’t give up searching.

subject.

Can I apply for a scholarship before acceptance into a university?

You should inform your university if you need to rely on a scholarship to fund your studies. Some universities offer ‘fully funded’ places where applicants need to have sufficient funding to gain acceptance into the school.

However, many institutions will allow you to apply for a program before you have the scholarship with the condition that you inform them if you are unable to accept the place due to lack of funds.

If you are unable to secure a scholarship, you should have time to withdraw your university application. You can also try looking for an alternative way to fund your studies before the term commences.

If the application requires an essay, what should I include in it?

Scholarship providers want to know why they should give the funds to you. Your essay should help you to stand out from the rest of the applicants. You can mention your achievements, ambitions, interests as well as why you want to enrol in a particular course.

Where can I get help with my scholarship applications?

You can get in touch with the scholarship provider if you need more information about a particular scholarship. If you are wondering what scholarship you are eligible for, check out our list of available scholarships or contact our Admissions office.
